To all of Mike’s readers, it is with profound sadness that, as close friends of his, we post this note. Mike passed away on January 5, 2023 from a sudden illness. He leaves behind a compendium of insight on sports and life and we all will miss the pieces he wrote twice a week for the past several years.
Onsportsandlife.com will be active for the immediate future so that folks can access the site’s archives, and we encourage folks to provide comments in his memory. We hope to compile a book of some of his best posts. We’d love folks to weigh in on one or two of their favorites over the years.
Mike knew that sports are a microcosm of the joy and heartache we all experience in our lives. We will all miss his remarkably crafted vignettes, nuanced and humorous, and full of data and anecdotes that covered the landscape of the sports world, both on the field and off.
Mike wrote a lot about America’s Pastime and this time of year he would begin to anticipate the return of players to Spring Training and the promise of Opening Day. As the next season rolls around, I know he’ll still be somewhere in the stands rooting for his Bronx Bombers.
We last saw him when he visited for Thanksgiving this past November. On his way back to Portsmouth, NH he got in a couple of rounds at Pinehurst, the historic golf resort in North Carolina. In his final round of golf he shot an 83. I’ll never forget his ultra-focused countenance when lining up a putt, knowing that sometimes the ball will find the center of the cup and sometimes it will roll out.
His departure from this world so suddenly left us all reeling. We’ll miss reading his capture on life and sports. But mostly we miss our friend.
